Oregon Nobel Laureate Symposium returns to Linfield Feb. 23-24 after 10-year hiatus

Physicist Bill Phillips does an on-stage demonstration with fog covering the floor.The Oregon Nobel Laureate Symposium returns to Linfield University’s McMinnville campus Feb. 23-24.

Established at Linfield by President Emeritus Charles Walker in 1985 after a major gift from an anonymous donor, the symposium has drawn 21 Nobel award winners to the McMinnville campus. Past speakers include Elie Wiesel (Nobel Peace Prize, 1986), Linus Pauling (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 1954; Nobel Peace Prize, 1962) and Oscar Arias (Nobel Peace Prize, 1987), among others. The last symposium was held in 2013.

“Linfield is one of a very small group of universities The Nobel Foundation authorized to hold these symposia, and we are honored and excited to revive this rich tradition,” Linfield President Miles K. Davis said. “These gatherings give students the opportunity to converse directly with some of the most brilliant minds on earth.” Continue reading

Some pretty extraordinary things happened on Linfield University’s McMinnville campus Nov. 9 and 11 during the inaugural NW Media Fest: Entertainment, News and Gaming.

It’s not every day that you get to hear the inside story of how Oregon’s largest newspaper covers the election … while that election is still happening. Yet Therese Bottomly, executive editor and vice president of content for The Oregonian/OregonLive, was on campus Wednesday as part of the first-ever NW Media Fest, sharing insights even as her team was back in Portland crunching voter results. Linfield hosts readings by authors Patricia Cutright Nov. 8 and Luis Alberto Urrea Nov. 15

Both events, held in the Jerald R. Nicholson Library (location), are free and open to the public.

Poet, novelist and essayist Luis Alberto Urrea will read from his most recent novel, “The House of Broken Angels” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Linfield University hosts “A Night with Syncopated Ladies”

Syncopated LadiesThey have elevated the art of tap dance through “fierce footwork and female force,” and on Oct. 5, Chloe Arnold’s Syncopated Ladies will raise the roof of Linfield University’s Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium.

The Los Angeles-based female tap dance band comes to Linfield for a one-night-only performance at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5. “A Night with Syncopated Ladies” will feature a 30-minute tap performance followed by a 30-minute talkback session. Continue reading

The Linfield University Alumni Association will recognize five alumni for their contributions to the community, professions and alma mater during its annual event, Linfield’s Finest at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 at Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, McMinnville. Winners of the 31st Annual Study Abroad Photo Contest announced

Sun Breaking on a Sicilian Valley (Greyson Monghan-Bergson, Italy)Students traveled all over the world in the past year and brought back snapshots of memorable people, places and moments. Earlier this semester, they submitted some of their best to the 31st Annual Study Abroad Photo Contest and gave the Linfield community to chance to vote for their favorites.

The International Programs Office is happy to announce this yea’s winners in five categories, Judge’s Award, Linfield students, People, Landscapes and Architecture. Full-size versions of all winners are available on the DigitalCommons.

‘Frankenstein,’ ‘First on the Rope’ will be directorial debuts for two students

Poster for Springfest 2022. Linfield University’s Theatre Program will present Springfest: Student–directed Theatre Shorts at 7:30 p.m. May 18 and 19 in Marshall Theatre located within Ford Hall.

Admission is free and seating is first-come, first-served. Two one-act plays are part of the performance, “Frankenstein” and a staged reading of “First on the Rope.” Students from Linfield’s advanced directing course, taught by Janet Gupton, collaborated to produce the show.

First Camas Fest comes to Linfield

Camas wildflowers.The community is invited to learn more and celebrate one of the area’s unique wildflowers — the camas — at the inaugural Camas Festival, hosted by Linfield University, celebrating the flower and the food the bulbs provide.

The festival will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 6 on the Linfield campus. The festival is a collaborative project of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, Greater Yamhill Watershed Council (GYWC), and the university. The Oak Grove is located on the northwest corner of the university’s campus.
