Marshall Theatre hosts “Doctor Voynich and Her Children”

Linfield University’s 103rd theatrical season opens with Leanna Keyes’ “Doctor Voynich and Her Children,” Sept. 28-Oct. 2. Combining theatrical history and a prediction for the U.S., “Doctor Voynich and Her Children” draws from Bertolt Brecht’s foundational play “Mother Courage and Her Children” and explores women’s rights in a post–apocalyptic United States. This play may not be suitable for all audiences due to mature themes and language. Recommended for ages 16 and older.

The Zingaresca Ensemble, featuring Linfield University’s Anton Belov, will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium inside Melrose Hall on Linfield’s McMinnville campus. Flamenco Pacifico kicks off Linfield Lively Arts series

Flamenco PacificoFlamenco Pacifico, a dynamic group of flamenco musicians and dancers, will perform at Linfield University at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.

The concert, the first performance of this year’s Linfield Lively Arts Concert Series, is free for all K-12 students and Linfield students with a current ID. General admission tickets are $10 and available at the door via cash or check. Linfield Art Gallery opens year with Pete Hoffecker Mejía exhibition

An artist talk and opening reception is at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31 in Delkin Recital Hall in the Vivian Bull Music Center. Light refreshments will follow in the gallery. Both the monthlong exhibition and the opening reception are free and open to the public.

The exhibition, titled “Remainders,” blends patterns of Latin American visual culture, home décor and modern geometric art using wood, found objects and mixed media structures.

Gallery hours are from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 12-5 p.m. Saturday. The Linfield Art Gallery is located in the James F. Miller Fine Arts Center on the Linfield University McMinnville Campus.

“Sounds of Summer” concert to benefit music education

Concert rock violinist Aaron Meyer performs a one-night-only concert, benefiting Linfield University’s Department of Music, at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28 at Youngberg Hill Winery. 

The Sounds of Summer concert features a collection of songs from Meyer’s latest albums. Although classically trained, Meyer’s repertoire ranges from Mozart to Vivaldi to Queen and Led Zeppelin. He will be joined by keyboardist Jean-Pierre Garau and guitarist Ivan Danilich.  Continue reading

Linfield composer wins statewide award, work featured in major festival

Linfield Professor Andrea Reinkemeyer will be honored as OMTA Composer of the Year later this month.

Andrea Reinkemeyer, a Linfield University associate professor and composer, has a busy summer lined up. In June, she will be honored as the Oregon Music Teachers Association (OMTA) Composer of the Year. A month later, her work will be featured in the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. 

Reinkemeyer, a Sherwood resident, will receive the OMTA Composer of the Year Award at the 2022 OMTA State Conference, being held June 22-23 at the Florence Events Center. One of her newest works, “Letter to a Friend,” for soprano, horn in F and piano, will premiere at the conference performed by Youngstown State University’s Dana Trio, a group flying out from Ohio specifically to perform Reinkemeyer’s songs.

Winners of the 31st Annual Study Abroad Photo Contest announced

Sun Breaking on a Sicilian Valley (Greyson Monghan-Bergson, Italy)Students traveled all over the world in the past year and brought back snapshots of memorable people, places and moments. Earlier this semester, they submitted some of their best to the 31st Annual Study Abroad Photo Contest and gave the Linfield community to chance to vote for their favorites.

The International Programs Office is happy to announce this yea’s winners in five categories, Judge’s Award, Linfield students, People, Landscapes and Architecture. Full-size versions of all winners are available on the DigitalCommons.

‘Frankenstein,’ ‘First on the Rope’ will be directorial debuts for two students

Poster for Springfest 2022. Linfield University’s Theatre Program will present Springfest: Student–directed Theatre Shorts at 7:30 p.m. May 18 and 19 in Marshall Theatre located within Ford Hall.

Admission is free and seating is first-come, first-served. Two one-act plays are part of the performance, “Frankenstein” and a staged reading of “First on the Rope.” Students from Linfield’s advanced directing course, taught by Janet Gupton, collaborated to produce the show.

Studio arts, digital arts seniors featured in Linfield Gallery “Exodus” exhibit

Exodus exhibit poster.The work of 11 students at Linfield University will be on display in the Linfield Galleryand Nils Lou Gallery May 11 through 29.

Titled “Exodus,” the exhibit features the thesis and portfolios of studio art and digital arts majors graduating later this month. The show represents the end of this chapter in the students’ lives as they leave Linfield and embark on the next part of their journey, an “exodus” of sorts. A reception for the artists is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 11 in the gallery on the McMinnville campus. Light refreshments will be provided.

Author and poet Luis Alberto Urrea will visit Linfield University in May.Update May 1, 2022:  Unfortunately, the visit from Luis Alberto Urrea has been postponed until fall. More information will come when a new schedule is confirmed.

Critically acclaimed and award-winning author Luis Alberto Urrea will read from and discuss his work on the Linfield University McMinnville Campus at 5:30 p.m. May 3 in the Jereld R. Nicholson Library.

Urrea’s visit is part of the Mac Reads Series, a collaborative partnership between Linfield, the McMinnville Public Library and Third Street Books with the goal of inspiring community-wide conversations around a topic. Continue reading
