Using the Orbis Cascade Alliance (Summit) Borrowing System

As Linfield College students you may borrow books from Orbis Cascade Alliance libraries, through Summit, an online catalog representing the holdings of the academic library members in Oregon and Washington. You will be searching Summit when you search Linfield WorldCat. When you request a Summit book from the catalog, you will be using the Summit borrowing system. If you live near or use any of the libraries, you can pick up and drop off your books at that library. For example, if you live in Stayton and attend Linfield classes in Salem, you can request books online that are available in the Summit catalog, order them through the system, and pick them up at the Willamette University library.

NOTE: Summit loans are for 6 weeks with NO renewals.

Here is what you need to do to use Summit to request books and other items.

Check the information in your Linfield Libraries circulation account for accuracy.

  1. Go to the “My Library Account” link on the Linfield Libraries homepage.  Log in with your name and library barcode.  If you cannot log in, contact Carol McCulley (cmccull@linfield.edu) or the library circulation desk at 503-883-2261. Your barcode may need to be added to the circ system.
  2. If you do not have a Linfield ID card with a library barcode, contact the DCE office (800-452-4176).
  3. Check the information in your account for accuracy, including the expiration date of your account, to be sure it has not expired.  For DCE students the patron type is 2. For DCE faculty and staff the patron type is 14.  If anything needs updating, contact Carol McCulley (cmccull@linfield.edu) or the library circulation desk at 503-883-2261.

If you pick up your books at Linfield’s McMinnville or Portland campuses or request them DCE via mail, you do not need to do anything else.

Check the map for Summit libraries in your area. If you want to pick up your Summit items at another Summit library:

  1. Go to the circulation desk at that library and register as a Summit borrower in that institution’s NRE circulation system.  You should also ask to be put in their circulation system as a local borrower, so you can check out books directly from that library, as well as pick up Summit books there. If the person at the circulation desk does not know about this, ask to speak to a supervisor OR show them this web page (under the ADP/DCE Services link on the Linfield Libraries homepage) so they can see what to do.  Many times at night or on weekends there are student workers, who are great, but might not remember all the details.
  2. You will be asked to go to the “My Library Account” link on the Linfield Libraries homepage and log in so the information in your account here can be entered into the NRE and local circulation systems of the other institution (That is why you need to check your information first).
  3. When you request an item from Summit, you will say you are affiliated with the school at which you will pick up your item (the school where you registered).
  4. You will be notified by e-mail when the item has arrived and you can go to that institution to pick it up.
  5. At any time you can request books from Summit and have them mailed to you DCE via mail.  You can still drop them off at any Summit library.

To borrow a book held by a Summit library through the Summit catalog:

1. Search Linfield WorldCat.

2. When you have found a book or other item to request from a Summit library, click on Request Summit Item.

IF YOU DO NOT LIVE near an Orbis Cascade Alliance library or you want your Summit items mailed to your home:

4. Choose your DCE via mail or your pick up location.

5. You may use any e-mail address for this request. It does not have to be your Linfield address. Click Submit.

If you are picking them up, you will receive an e-mail that your book is ready for pickup. If you have requested DCE via mail, we will ship them within 48 hours to your mailing address by first class mail. However, it is quicker to use a local Orbis Cascade Alliance library if you live near one.

The Orbis Cascade Alliance expands our horizons considerably, but since we are using books from other institutions, it is important to return them on time. There will be fines for late and lost books.

If you need to mail the books back to the McMinnville campus, remember to allow time for mailing or you can drop the books off either at the McMinnville campus (there is a drop box in front of the Jereld R. Nicholson Library) or the Portland campus. You may also drop off Summit items at any Orbis Cascade Alliance library.
