Download Instructions
The Lindex is now a dynamically generated PDF document. This means that it is updated daily and kept as a digital document for you to view online or download to your desktop. From there it may be printed (Why did Linfield do this?). You can download the full Lindex, the Quick Phone Index and you can now download the Lindex to your Palm Pilot! Download Palm Pilot Installation Instructions.
In order for you to access the online Lindex, you will need to enter your email address and password in Linfield's Network Password Server (What's This?)
Once you have your password recorded, you may log in to get the Lindex, the Quick Phone Index (QPI), or Palm file. Depending on how your web browser is set up, one of several things may happen. PDF's require Adobe's Acrobat Reader to be viewed. If you do not have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, you may be greeted with an alert box similar to this:

You will need to download Acrobat Reader
If you have Acrobat Reader installed, your browser may also have the Acrobat plug-in installed. In that case, the Lindex will open up inside your browser window. Your browser will have an additional tool bar for navigating the document. It has not been downloaded to your computer! In order to do that, just click the little disk icon in the tool bar (see image below).

OS X users and those who have Acrobat Reader but not the plug-in should have the document download to their desktop without any prompting (Why won't this just download to my desktop without my having to jump through hoops?).
Soon to be frequently asked questions
Why did Linfield do this?
Several reasons.
- Traditionally, the Lindex was printed in late October, after incoming students had finished moving around. It was disorienting for everyone, particularly new students, to be without a campus directory for the first two months of the semester.
- When staff changes occur during the academic year, the print Lindex goes out of date and stays that way until the following October.
- Each year Linfield spends several thousand dollars printing the Lindex for everyone on campus. By moving to a digital format, we can reduce the number of print copies distributed, save trees, save money and still be able to print hard copies for those who prefer them.
- The old Lindex was a hand processed document. It was cumbersome to produce and prone to errors. The new version comes from personel databases with support from ITS to keep it accurate.
What's LDAP?
LDAP stands for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. It's a way of storing directory types of information (names, passwords, addresses) for fast retrieval.
Why won't this just download to my desktop without my having to jump through hoops?
There's a name for files that download themselves to your computer without your asking: viruses. Modern operating systems are being designed to prevent precisely these kinds of files from getting on your machine. Your machine is most likely configured to handle files that end in .pdf in a certain way. If not, it will ask you what to do with them before it downloads them. You should thank it!
