Reducing the amount of "Spam" in your email
In order to reduce the amount of unsolicited advertising email (popularly
known as Spam) Linfield gets, we have our email system set to reject
email from something called an open relay email servers. We (and may
other email providers) do this because spammers often use open relay
systems to distribute their email and hide the address of the system
they are really on.
Email sent from an open relay site is blocked by Linfield's email server
and returned to the sender along with a message containing the reason
for the block. Open relay systems are kept track of by several public
ally available databases that our server refers to. The specific server responsible
Linfield email users are most likely to experience this because someone
sends them email from an open relay site that is otherwise legitimate
and not spam. Less frequently, Linfield email users from off campus might
have their own email rejected if the mail delivery setting (the SMTP server)
uses an open relay server.
If one of your correspondents, or yourself, encounter this blocking, the
returned email should be sent to the service provider along with a request
to close their open relay email system.
