Uploading a File in Modx

This is a pretty common need and not hard to do. Before you begin, there are a few guidelines for the files you upload.

  1. Make sure your document is saved in the format you want uploaded. For MS Word , .doc or .docx. The older .doc format will be more backwards compatible. For PDF's it's .pdf.
  2. Make sure there are no spaces in the file name!
  3. The file size should be as small as possible. Our server has a 4mb upload limit but your files should be smaller, ideally below 1mb.
  4. Make sure you know where the files are on your computer.

Log in to Modx and navigate to the page you want to link to the files from. Once there type in the text you will use for the link to the file and highlight it (or highlight any pre-existing text you want to use as the link). After the link text is highlighted, click on the "link" icon in the editor tool bar (see below).

When you click the link icon, you should get a popup window. Click on your department's file folder. If your department does not have a folder, click on "Create New Folder" and in the resulting popup window, give the folder a name with no spaces. (see below):

Once you are in your folder, click on the icon of the file you want to insert. If you need to upload a new file to insert, click on the "Browse" button at the bottom of the window, navigate to the file on your computer and select "Open". The file path should appear in the box next to the "Browse" button. Then click "Upload" in the bottom right corner of the window (see below). Tip: If you anticipate uploading multiple files, go ahead and upload them now. It will save you a few steps later on when you build links to them.

After you hit "Upload", click on the newly uploaded file icon in the window. The window should close and you should see the path to the newly uploaded file in the link url box of the previous popup window (see below).

The last step is to simply click the "Insert" button. Your file is uploaded and your link is good to go! You totally rock!
