IDS 271 Mexico: Image and Text will be taught in the context of the Linfield Oaxaca Program Field School, with close ties to IDS 275 Oaxaca Anthropology and Spanish. The course shall emphasize an integration of material resulting from program participants being intellectually and socially engaged resident observers in a foreign setting (see the definition of resident observer in the program introduction above). As a student you will be required to create and combine text, interview material and images. The seminar is synthetic, emphasizing Mexican cultural dynamics, history, society and visual culture. As in any seminar, each of you will bring your experiences to class discussions for the good of yourself the others. You will therefore be required to participate actively, not passively as in a lecture course, and to be alert enough to recognize learning opportunities, however informally they may appear to be.
