Chiang Mai University
All 12 of us have been busy here in Chiang Mai! We started our morning today by going to the college of Chiang Mai University. We were greeted by a local professor who explained some more about traditional Thai culture from 100 years ago and longer. The group learned how Thai culture was one of the only Asian cultures which was a matriarchal society. Since we have 9 females on our trip, we were very interested in this! The local professor explained how the grandmother and/or mother of the house made the decisions for the family, which included which males could marry into the family and how to run the family farm. We even discussed how the females would choose their spouse once they reached an appropriate age by interviewing guys from their village on the porch of their homes. After touring the traditional Thai houses located right on the campus, we were entertained with traditional Thai performances by previous graduates of Chiang Mai University. The graduates performed some music from older-style guitars and flute-like instruments. We also watched some traditional style Thai dancing, as well as a sword-dancing routine. The 12 of us are so lucky to be here because the traditional Thai art is so beautiful! We ended our half day with some tea, coffee and snacks while being able to ask our hosts questions. Today was a great way to spend our day here in Chiang Mai!
