2013-11-06 Summer Is Here!

Well, my time here continues to dwindle down; I only have about 4 days left before I head home. I’ve been making the most of my time here, and have still experienced some really cool things. I finished my finals last week, and so I’ve had about a week and a half to relax and enjoy the New Zealand sun, since the summer season is now upon us.

New Zealanders celebrate a holiday here called Guy Fawkes Day, and it reminded me a lot of our Independence Day at home. They’re celebrating a man named Guy Fawkes who tried, but failed, to blow up the parliament. In honor of it, everyone lights off fireworks. I headed to the beach that night with some of my Kiwi friends to watch them, and set off some fireworks of our own. Since we weren’t home on the Fourth of July this year, it was nice to experience a similar holiday here in New Zealand. The beach was so crowded with families and students all there to watch the fireworks show, it was really awesome to experience the community coming together like that before I have to leave.

The weather has been so nice lately, its sunny almost every day and just the right temperature; its just been such a good way to end my study abroad experience. Just the other day, I got invited to play a touch rugby game with some of my Kiwi friends that live in the flats above mine. It reminded me a lot of IM sports at home; all these students got together at a nearby park, and just played some pick-up rugby. I learned a lot of new rules about the game; it’s a lot different playing it than watching it. All the Kiwis are very into rugby, and I loved getting out there and playing with them. I wasn’t the best, but it was a great way to learn more about the game they love.

I think I’m going to start packing up soon. I’m very excited to go home and see my friends and family, but also very sad to be leaving my newfound home in New Zealand. In order to ease the pain a little bit, I’ve decided to promise myself I’ll come back one day.
