2012-11-16 Mixed Feelings About Returning Home

We are now down to half a month. We are all very busy with trying to do as much as we can: study hard for the upcoming tests, and buy souvenirs for friends and family. Our classes are getting a bit harder because of the homework load as well as the quizzes given everyday.
We are also having lots of fun with our classes too. For our culture class, we got to go to an elementary school last week. We sat in on their English class and then got to try calligraphy. Later we ate lunch with them. Everyone had a fun time, especially the boys because all the young boys loved Tyson and Bryan and always wanted them to play tag and wrestling with them.
On Tuesday, we went to make soba (Japanese buckwheat noodles) by hand. It was a lot harder than it looked. All our noodles turned out to be different sizes, but our Sensei's praised us still. We ate them happily and we were very full at the end. We also got to try meditating for 20 minutes at a temple. The people in charge were very patient with us because we all moved around a lot because our legs kept falling asleep. It was a very enlightening experience.
Lastly, this Friday we have a small seminar that the school is hosting and  all the exchange students (from America at least) are putting on little performances. We will be making cookies (that does not require an oven), writing stories, doing presentations, and singing in Japanese. We are all nervous but very excited.

Everyone is back to their old routines at the dorm. We all miss our host families and wish that we could stay with them longer but we are still in contact with them and will hopefully have to time to visit them again before we leave.

We have all been doing good, however, we are all experiencing mixed feelings about not wanting to leave Japan, but still anxiously ready to go home. We have been keeping ourselves busy with school and clubs and other fun activities. Besides that we have all been healthy and eating WAAAAAY too much food. The Japanese food is very delicious and we all love it.

We are all working hard and are all excited to see Linfield again in Jan/Spring term.

Best regards,
Marissa Menard
