After arriving late on Tuesday August 14, the Oregon group wasted no time in getting to know Quito. On Sunday morning he 13 of us, along with our Quito program leaders Franco and Marleen, took a guided tour of "El Centro Histórico" (The Historic Center). El Centro is full of beautiful churches, plazas, history, and more churches. We spent the morning walking around and getting acquainted with the area and visiting some of the many churches. They are so beautiful and ornate! Then, we went on a tour of a history museum just off of "La Plaza Grande" (The Big Plaza). After that we went to lunch at the "Frutería Monserrat," and ate traditional Ecuadorian food. I had "locro," which is a potato soup served with avocado. After lunch we headed up to "La Basilica" which is a gothic style church. It is quite an impressive sight. We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the church. We were able to climb to the top and see a view of all of Quito! We were fortunate to have a beautiful, sunny, summer day to see "El Centro." I know that I will be going back there again to enjoy the live music, beautiful churches, and culture before I return.
