Journals from HHPA/HESC 398 Island Health Care: Type 2 Diabetes in the Bahamas January Term 2012
My name is Christian Hanna, I’m from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and I’m a senior majoring in exercise science pursuing minors in chemistry and biology. In the future, I will likely continue school and hope to earn a master’s degree in a field related to exercise science. This year I finished my fourth and final season playing for the varsity football team at Linfield; I played safety and corner for the Wildcats. Growing up in Coeur d’Alene I played baseball, basketball, and ran track and field as well as football. I’ve always enjoyed all aspects of training, and understanding the mechanisms for movement of the human body is what drove me to study exercise science. In my time off from school I like to wakeboard in the summer and snowboard in the winter near the Coeur d’Alene area. I also enjoying making videos (Youtube channel: Hannaman42) and dancing as pseudo-hobbies.
Going to the Bahamas is going to be an incredible experience. Of course the location of the class is more than ideal but I’m also excited to experience all aspects of the Bahamian culture as well as help promote prevention and control of type II diabetes among the local communities. This is my first time living outside of the U.S. for longer than a week and also my first time in the Caribbean. I know there will be many more firsts for me throughout my time on the islands and I’m excited to see what comes.
