Journals from Spring Semester in Oaxaca, Mexico

2009-04-25 Chiapas!

Hey guys! I just heard about the Swine Flu that has broken out in Mexico City and I believe there have been some cases in Texas and southern California, too. Right now we're in Chiapas, a pretty rural state south of Oaxaca. I doubt we have a lot to worry about, but we're being careful and washing our hands often. Chiapas is really amazing, and interesting. We traveled literally all yesterday to get here. We met at the bus station at 6:30 a.m., took three buses, and finally ot here 10:30 last night. Today we went to a Mayan pueblo named Zinacantal. A lot of the women wore purple and blue colored clothing, just in similar but different designs. The guys and a few of the girls dressed up in a traditional Zinacantal wedding attire. We went into a craft workshop, and also into a house where an old woman and family made us really yummy tortillas, and there was some cheese, salsa, salt and dried squash powder that was tasty as well. When we got back to the hotel and had class for about an hour. The room was a little cold and most of us were under the covers, eating pan dulce, and discussing the EZLN and Zapatista movement. Tomorrow, were going to Chamula and I believe were going to Palenque on Monday, coming back to San Cristbal de las Casas (where we are now) on Friday, and then traveling on Friday night back to Oaxaca to arrive in the morning. Ill post more later! - Marina
