MUSC-298 Italian Opera from Baroque to Verismo
Italian opera began at the break of the seventeenth century as an attempt by a group of Florentine nobles and intellectuals to recreate the theater of ancient Greece. Throughout the baroque era the genre developed into a sophisticated art form that eventually spread to all countries of Western Europe. The nineteenth century saw the evolution of opera from the elegant bel canto of Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti to Verdian romanticism and the brutal realism of Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Puccini and Giordano. The history of opera is the history of changing aesthetic norms, social and political ideas and the society as a whole. The genre of opera will be studied as a gateway to Italian and European culture.
Attendance of live operatic performances will depend on schedules.
