MATH-298 The Art of the Mathematics of the East
While many of the mathematical results developed in China and Japan are the same as those in the west, the proofs have been substantially different. Moreover, the very notion of proof was somewhat different. Our goal is to explore this difference by studying algebra in China and geometry in Japan. We will visit Beijing and Xi'an both capitals of China at some point. We will visit with scholars and travel to museums with mathematical artifacts. We will focus our work in China on the results and proofs in algebra and number theory. In Japan, we will visit shrines in Kyoto with existing sangaku, wooden tablets with decorative geometry problems. We will also work through some of the mathematics involved, focusing on the proofs.
Prerequisite: MATH 170; it is strongly recommended that students will have also taken MATH 175. All students are required to enroll in IDST 090 in Fall 2012.
