HHPA-398  Island Health Care: Type 2 Diabetes in the Bahamas

This experiential and service learning field based course will introduce students to the social, economic and cultural influences that are directly or indirectly related to the development of a chronic health condition. Students will investigate the confounding factors that are contributing to the high incidence and prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the remote areas of the Bahamas. Students will examine the current state of the local health care system in the remote areas of the Bahamas to gain a better understanding of the cultural influences. Students will complete a service component that will provide basic diabetes education to a regional Bahamian population.
