IDST-298 Topics in Latin America: Guatemalan Urban Life, Past and Present
This is a field-based course in Guatemala, focusing on urban politics from pre-Columbian times to present. Field trips will include the following sites: Quetzaltenango, Zaculeu, Santiago Atitlán and Lake Atitlán, and Tikal. Participants will be working on a Habitat for Humanity build in Quetzaltenango, as part of a one-credit community service project, using it as field experience for studying current urban issues in Guatemala, including social movements, urban poverty and joint leadership systems of indigenous and mestizo governments.
All participants must register for a one-credit community service course (SOAN 040) in addition to the 4-credit IDST 298 Guatemalan Urban Life, Past and Present. Students may elect to register for the SOAN 040 as part of their fall semester schedule (under the flat fee tuition charge, for 18 credits or less) or during Jan term 2011 and be assessed an additional Jan term fee (see note on Jan Term per credit fee above).
