TCCA/THTR-398 Theatre and Oratory in Italy and Greece
Consideration of the role of the theatre and rhetoric in ancient societies, with a focus on study and performance of ancient Greek and Roman myths, orations and plays. Examination of famous playwrights and orators of the ancient world, including Aristophanes, Aeschylus, Cicero, Demosthenes, Euripides, Gorgias, and Sophocles. Focus on the influence of Greek and Roman heroes and gods on the cultures of Greece and Italy. Basic theory, methods, and practice of performance and public speaking. Visits to ancient temples, archaeological museums, basilicas, and other areas of relevance throughout Greece and Italy.
Prerequisite: No pre-requisites are required, but students who have taken one or more of the following courses will be looked upon favorably: TCCA 220: Performing Literature, TCCA 230: Intercultural Communication, TCCA 420: Advanced Topics in Performance, TCCA 455: Rhetorical Theory and Criticism, THRT 181 Beginning Actions, THTR 281: Intermediate Acting, THTR 470: Theatre History and Literature I, THTR 473: Theatre History and Literature II, HIST 230: Ancient Greece, HIST 233: Ancient Rome.
