American Citizens can register with the US Government when traveling overseas
The Department of State has created a secure website where American citizens
planning to travel overseas can register on line with the U.S. Government.
This
system replaces the requirement for Americans to register directly with
the Embassy in the country where they plan to travel to or reside in. All
Embassies and Consulates have access to the website and can monitor who is
in their consular district.
For one-semester students, you would register as
a short-term traveler.
Students studying abroad for the year would register as long-term travelers.
Please register with the U.S. Government on-line at: https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/.
This website will walk you through the registration process."
