MATH-298 Traversing the Eulerian Trail
Leonhard Euler is one of the most prolific mathematicians of all time. There are few areas of mathematics in which Euler's contributions have not played a significant role. We will focus on the mathematics of Euler and investigate his influence and work in number theory, infinite series, logarithms, algebra, combinatorics, and graph theory. Additionally, we will consider how the concept of "proof" has changed from Euler's time to the present, and examine how Euler's work compares to modern proofs. The course will take place in St. Petersburg, Russia; Berlin, Germany; and Basel, Switzerland.Prerequisite: MATH 170 Calculus I, with MATH 180 Calculus II strongly recommended.
