BIOL-398 Biogenesis in Italy, Switzerland and France: A Historical Perspective of Microbiology Discoveries
This course will trace the work of scientists in Italy and France, including Redi, Spallanzani, and Pasteur, and their contributions of evidence for the theory of biogenesis. Additionally, we will also read from the works of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) and Jean-Baptiste Lamaarck (1744-1829) who each faced social and political pressures during their scientific careers. The goals of the course are two fold. First, students will trace the development of a scientific theory, from the initial challenge of the existing paradigm to the final elaboration of a longstanding theory. Students will learn about development of hypotheses and experimental design as well as data analysis and interpretation. Second, students will observe the ways in which science and society have interacted throughout history, using the lives of these scientists as examplesFaculty: Professor Anne Kruchten
