SOAN/EDUC-398 How Children Learn: Scandinavian Schools, Society, and Culture
The purpose of the is course is to examine Scandinavian culture, society, and educational policy as it relates to schooling practices and how children learn in Norway and Sweden. Students will visit kindergartens, elementary (compulsory, primary) schools, and secondary (lower and upper secondary) schools, as well as museums, churches, parks, gardens, art galleries and architecture. Site visits include Stockholm, Sweden; Oslo, Norway; Byrknesøy, Norway; and Bergen, Norway. Overall, this course is designed students to provide students with a better awareness of sociological/educational principles that relate to education in Sweden and Norway. It is also designed to examine the current state of education, and the role of schools as agents of selection and socialization. Students should be able to analyze, study, critique, reflect, and think deeply about education in Sweden and Norway.Faculty: Professor Mindy Larson and Professor Amy Orr
