January Term Abroad
MUSC-298 Music Cultures of the World: Trinidad and Tobago
Trinidad is the birthplace of Calypso, the steel drum, and limbo dance. Study how creativity and passion for music helped build a post-colonial nation in the Caribbean. Explore Trinidadian music in the context of tradition, identity, function, and political and social significance. Many diverse soundscapes range from music for Hindu ceremony to steelpan music for the Trinidadian Carnival. Steelpan, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, features specially finished and tuned oil drums in groups of up to 100 players. Experience steelband panyards, interact with local musicians, and see a mask-maker’s studio. January is the ideal time to visit and document the music as the many bands prepare for Carnival in Trinidad. For study in Trinidad and Tobago, music ethnographies of Africa, India, and South America will be examined. English is the primary spoken language in Trinidad. Class will be based in the Port of Spain with local site visits. This course is equally suited for music majors and non-majors.Faculty: Professor Faun Tiedge
