Goals for the Major
In successfully completing a major/minor in history, a student will possess:
- A sensitivity to the values and attitudes of other times and places.
- An appreciation of basic continuities in human affairs.
- The ability to observe and analyze significant change over time.
- An awareness of multiple causation.
- The recognition that history is an ongoing and incomplete search for truth.
- The relativist character of the discipline.
- The skills necessary to research and write well.
Requirements for Major or Minor
For a Major: 40 credits in the department, including 285, 485, and at least one course (200 level or higher) in each of the following areas: (1) Europe and the Mediterranean; (2) Asia and the Pacific;
(3) North America; (4) Latin America and the Caribbean.
For a Minor: 20 credits in the department, including at least 12 credits at the 200 level or higher.
For a Minor in American Studies: See American Studies.
For Oregon Initial Teacher Licensure in Social Studies: a student must complete the Linfield Teacher Education Program and the State of Oregon licensure requirements (see pages 57 and 58 of the print catalog). In order to complete these requirements, a student must begin taking education courses no later then his/her sophomore year. The student must be advised by an Education Department faculty member each semester prior to registration.
