Simple Tuition Loan Comparison Tool - Please be sure to indicate whether you are searching for a Subsidized or Unsubsidized Stafford Loan (or a combination of both) under the Loan Amount Distribution heading when using this loan comparison tool.
The basic terms of the Federal Stafford and PLUS loans are set by the federal government, so maximum interest rate, loan fees and deferment options will be identical for these loans no matter which lender you choose. However, lenders do have the ability to offer special benefits to borrowers, such as reduced interest rates for automatic debit payment, interest rate reductions at the point the loan enters repayment, interest rate reductions or cash back after a specified number of on time payments, etc. These special borrower benefits are unique to specific lenders and are not mandated or controlled by the federal government.
The lenders on Linfield’s suggested lender list offer competitive benefits, solid customer service, electronic payment of loan funds and a variety of savings programs during loan repayment. You may choose any lender you wish, including those not included on this list.
Linfield College does not benefit in any way from your choice of lender. The Office of Financial Aid will work to ensure the prompt processing and certification of Stafford or PLUS loans from any lender you select.

Helping students enroll in and graduate from Linfield College is the mission of Linfield’s financial aid programs. Some types of aid are based on academic performance and achievement, while other types of aid are based on the financial situation of the student and family. Over 90% of the students attending Linfield receive some form of financial assistance, and 70% of the students attending receive financial assistance based on their financial aid eligibility, or “financial need.” Academic scholarships are available to the best-qualified applicants each year, regardless of eligibility for other types of financial aid.

Completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) is required for consideration of all types of need-based aid, including Linfield College funding, federal funding and State of Oregon funding to state residents. The priority date for filing the FAFSA is February 1st. Award amounts are dependent on financial need, specific requirements for the award, and availability of funding. Some need-based grant recipients are not selected by Linfield, such as the Federal Pell Grant and the Oregon Opportunity Grant.

Federal Sources

Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) A federal grant awarded to students who are both Pell Grant eligible and U.S. citizens who meet other eligibility requirements as set forth by the Department of Education.

Federal Pell Grants are awarded to undergraduate students who attend on at least a half time basis. The award formula to determine who is eligible for a Federal Pell Grant is established by Congress.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants are awarded each year in combination with Federal Pell Grants. Students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant will be considered for the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, based on availability of funds.

Linfield Sources

Linfield College Grants are awarded based on need to full-time students. Award amounts vary. A separate application is not necessary.

Linfield Diversity Grants are awarded based on financial need or other factors to students of color who will contribute to the Linfield community. Recommendations for the grant are made for the McMinnville Campus by the Director of Multicultural Programs in consultation with the Dean of Enrollment Services and Director of Admission. The Director of Enrollment Services makes recommendations for the Portland Campus.

Talent Awards are awarded based on need to full-time students with special talents in activity areas including drama, forensics, journalism, and music. These awards are based on recommendations by academic departments and the amounts vary. A separate application is not necessary.

Oregon State Sources

Oregon Opportunity Grants are awarded to Oregon resident undergraduate students who enroll full or part time at Linfield. An analysis of responses to questions on the FAFSA will determine Oregon Opportunity Grant eligibility. Oregon Opportunity Grants are awarded solely on the basis of financial need. Award amounts are subject to change by the Oregon Legislature. The Oregon Opportunity Grant may be received for eight semesters if a student maintains satisfactory academic progress and files a new FAFSA each year to demonstrate continued financial need.

What happens after you apply for financial aid?

After you have you have been admitted to the college and filed the FAFSA, Linfield will evaluate your application and determine eligibility for scholarships, grants, work and loans. An award letter and accompanying materials will be mailed to you. The award mailings will begin on the following dates:

Early Action (Fall 2008) — January 15, 2008

Regular Decision (Fall 2008) — April 1, 2008

You will need to meet the preferred filing timelines and have complete files in order to receive an award on this schedule. The award letter and listing of the types of aid offered, is commonly referred to as a “financial aid package.” The package can contain one type or many different types and amounts of aid. Included in the accompanying materials will be information about each type of aid. Forms and instructions will help you calculate your portion of the costs.

Determining Financial Aid Eligibility

The financial aid system recognizes the premise that the family, both parents and students, assume the primary responsibility for paying for educational expenses. Financial aid is intended to assist those who otherwise could not afford the entire amount of a college education.

The system requires a process to determine who is and is not able to pay for educational expenses. The calculation that determines financial aid eligibility (financial need) is:

  Cost of Attendance
- Expected Family Contribution
_________________________________
  Financial Need

Cost of Attendance is determined by adding costs for tuition, fees, room, board, books, and other expenses.

The federal processor using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) calculates Expected Family Contribution.

Linfield College recognizes financial need as a starting point to determine which kinds of financial aid can be awarded. Not all students have their full financial need met through aid awarded by Linfield. You may not receive every type of financial aid available. It is important that you apply for all private scholarships available through high schools, businesses, foundations and community groups.

Your family contribution will stay approximately the same at any college you choose to attend, so you can expect to receive more financial assistance at a higher cost private college compared to a less expensive public college.

Families who demonstrate financial need can receive a package of financial aid which usually includes a combination of gift aid (scholarships and grants) and self-help (loans and employment) to meet the need.
