Linfield learning: Jim Diamond, a quantum leap to China
Student-faculty relationships can blossom into long-term projects.
Such is the case between Chemistry Professor Jim Diamond and Jingsong Zhu '93. Zhu invited his former professor to spend this academic year working with him in the Nanotechnology Center in Beijing, China. Diamond's research is centered on developing methods for the quantum mechanical description of optical properties of nanoscale devices - which are at the core of modern miniaturized instrumentation.
Diamond has immersed himself in Chinese culture, sharing an apartment with a Chinese graduate student, bicycling to work and exploring Beijing in his first few weeks there.
