Linfield learning: Julianne Upton '11, Math adds up for Upton
Julianne Upton '11 spent the summer playing with complex subjects such as dynamical systems and knot theory at the Carleton College Summer Mathematics Program for Women, a highly selective program for promising mathematicians. Upton, a double major in math and physics and a minor in German, has been enjoying math and science since she was young. "I have always had encouragement to be on the science side of things," she said. "My mom has always said I can do anything."
In addition to polishing her math skills, Upton is working at Applied Physics Technologies, founded by Bill Mackie '71, professor of physics at Linfield. She hopes to study in Germany and to take courses at the prestigious Budapest Semester in Mathematics program offered through St. Olaf College her senior year.
