Prior to the start of Transfer Transitions 2014, Linfield offers pre-transitions programs to give new students an opportunity to become immersed into the life of the college by focusing on an area of passion. Students who are planning to participate in a fall sport – football, cross country, soccer or volleyball – will not be able to participate in both, as those programs start at about the same time as the pre-orientation programs listed below, and students are unable to do both.
All pre-transitions programs begin on Friday, August 15. Check in to the college and housing is scheduled from 9am-12:30pm, and students in any pre-transitions program will move into their assigned residence hall and room. Parents and family are welcome to participate in the day's activities. At 3:30pm all new students and their families will attend a Welcome to Linfield session in Melrose Hall.
The SOIL (Sustainably Oriented Interconnected Living) Project is a weeklong applied sustainability program for students who are new to Linfield. Through participating in SOIL, participants will learn about what it means to live sustainably at Linfield and in the McMinnville community. The SOIL Project will include learning about and engaging with local sustainability resources, Zero Waste efforts, and sustainable local businesses. Students will also gain first-hand experience volunteering at local, organic farms; navigating the town and local transit systems; and learning how to adopt and apply sustainable lifestyle practices. After The SOIL Project, participants will have connected with other new students and developed skills and resources for sustainability leadership on campus and in the community. iFOCUS (interdisciplinary First year Orientation Camp for Undergraduate Sciences) is a chance for participants to start their Linfield Science Career with an interdisciplinary hands-on laboratory and field experience. The iFOCUS program is an opportunity to work with Linfield College faculty and student researchers before classes begin and learn about science across the traditional science disciplines of biology, chemistry, math and physics at Linfield.
