The English Department provides much of the backbone for a liberal arts education. Cultural literacy comes in part, at least, by being well read not only in current literature but also in the traditions of American, British, and continental literature that go back at least as far as the classical literature of Greece and Rome.
In addition to providing courses for the general student, the English department offers two majors, one in literature (English) and one in creative writing. Some of our students use their major to prepare for a career in secondary education. Others go on to graduate schools of various sorts — schools in literary studies, in creative writing, law schools, business schools. Our students are well prepared for any graduate school or career where reading and writing skills are important.
Also, the English faculty play a major role in staffing Linfield’s First Year Inquiry Seminars (INQS 125) and offer a compelling range of topics each year. More information on First Year Inquiry Seminars can be found here.
