OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES:

This course is a survey of the principles of management, its functions, practices, concepts and challenges in a changing local and global economy. Management skills today require a leader to engage workers’ hearts and minds, as well as take advantage of their physical labor.  The objective of this course is to expose you to the ways that managers can do this.

WELCOME PAGE:

Please review the “Welcome Page” which is available via the first page of the classroom.  There is important information in that document about various policies in the class and we handle the virtual classroom (and a way to earn 10 bonus points……).

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a three credit class in the study of the four key management functions- Planning, Organizing, Leading and Controlling.  The course is designed around these four key areas of management skill. All four of these functions—and many of the topics within them—can constitute an entire class in and of itself.  This is an overview class to expose you to areas that you might find interesting and perhaps entice you to study them more.  Think of the class like an appetizer plate….it’s a little taste of everything but not a full plate of any of the topic—they all can be studied in much more detail.

PERFORMANCE-BASED LEARNER OUTCOMES:

With your active involvement, by the end of the course you will:

be familiar with management and leadership theories and practices.

have an understanding of the four basic management functions and how they are applied in organizational settings.

understand the concept of mission statements and why they should drive organizational strategic planning and strategy critical activities.

recognize the evolving role of a manager in an environment characterized by uncertainty and change.

understand how organizational change is initiated and the sources of resistance to change.

be able to explain the role of human resource management in strategic planning.

understand how diversity and harassment issues affect the workplace.

develop an insight into attitudes and human motivation and how these impact the organizational environment.

have an understanding of the fundamentals of leadership, teamwork and group processes.

THESE OUTCOMES WILL BE ASSESSED BY:

Chapter quizzes, weekly participation in discussion threads about that weeks topic, and five self assessment exercises.

CLASS OVERVIEW:

The class is broken into five topic areas, one topic per week of the quarter.  All dates are shown below.  Please be cognizant of the extremely tight time parameters that exist on a class as condensed as this.  It is expected you will spend seven to eight hours PER WEEK contributing to the discussion string as well as the time it takes you to read several chapters and take the appropriate quizzes.  Unless you can dedicate a large chunk of your time to this class for the next five weeks I would encourage you to think about taking it at another time. As an instructor my goal is to see that you succeed in completing the class and completing it with the knowledge base you will need to be successful in other classes that require this material to have been mastered.

TOPIC LECTURES:

Each topic week will have a lecture that’s been written to help you understand the material.  Some of the chapter quiz questions will come from these lectures as well.  You will access them via the Web CT classroom, under the “topics” area.  Additionally, each chapter has a link to various places where you can get additional information and support functions (such as Power Point presentations, chapter outlines, etc).

CHAPTER QUIZZES:

Each chapter will have a quiz.  Please note- this will mean that you will be responsible to complete three quizzes per week.  Quizzes consist of 30 questions each.  Obviously, these are open-book but they will have time limits of one hour on them.  If you have not read the chapter before you take the quiz you will most likely run out of time to finish it.  To be successful in these you need to have read the chapter, reviewed the material and be familiar with the topics covered.  Then when you take the quiz if you don’t know the answer and need to look it up- you will be familiar enough to know where the topic is discussed.  These quizzes will be available for the topic week only.

DISCUSSION THREADS:

Each week will have a discussion thread.  This will consist of one thread for each chapter so again you will have six threads per week (two questions per chapter) that you are required to participate in.  It is imperative that you participate in all discussions every week.  The discussion thread will be based on either the Case for Critical Analysis or the Management in Practice- Ethical Dilemma at the end of each chapter.  The discussion threads will open Weds mornings and close on Tuesday nights and are aligned with the week’s topic.  Please see the “how discussion threads are graded” posting by me in the “general class questions” area of the discussions.  Please review this before the class starts so you are not in for an unpleasant surprise at the end of the first week.  The first week will have 90 points possible in discussions- approximately 10% of the total grade.  You can not afford to bypass the first week of discussions if you expect to get an average or above average grade in the class.

In order to keep the discussions manageable you will be assigned into groups the first day of class.

MANAGERS WORKBOOK EXERCISES
:

You will be asked to complete five Managers Workbook exercises as indicated on the assignment schedule below.  These are self-assessment exercises that are done only to assist you in learning more about yourself.  After completion of the exercise, summarize what you found out about yourself in two to three paragraphs and submit it via the assignment drop box.

CLASS POLICIES:

A. Contacting Your Professor: The best way to contact me is by email through Web CT. Normally I will get back to you on the same day.  I will post my “office hours” weekly in the discussions area.  I do my best to return all emails the same day, however there may be times I am unavailable.  Please check the “office hours” if you have sent me an email and I have not responded.

 B. Completing Assignments: Because of the condensed nature of the class, all assignments must be completed on time.  Discussion threads and quizzes will be closed on Tuesday nights.  One of the things that are imperative for success in this course is keeping up with the reading and quizzes.  Please remember that this is not a “work-at-your-own-pace” course.   It is expected that all written assignments will be submitted with zero or minimal   spelling and/or grammar errors.  This is a college class and that level of professionalism is required.  I do not grade down on the discussion threads for spelling.  These are “free thinking” and I feel it’s best if you don’t have to worry about correct spelling although I do appreciate some effort in double checking your spelling before posting.

C. Academic Honesty: Plagiarism is the use of the ideas and words of others in your writing and/or the failure to give credit to others when quoting from their work. A simple restating of the ideas of others using different words may not be adequate to prevent plagiarism. Remember that plagiarism includes "ideas and words." When in doubt, use quotation marks and give appropriate credit in your footnotes. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. It is the policy of Linfield College and my policy to penalize plagiarism.

D. Incompletes: A grade of Incomplete (I) is given only in emergency situations. The student must request an incomplete in writing and must obtain instructor permission.  Written documentation of the emergency situation (such as a Doctor’s letter) may be required. All uncompleted work must be completed within the time limits set. If you do not complete the missing work, your grade will be based on the work turned in with all missing work receiving no credit.

Please note—“not having time” to do the work is not going to be considered an emergency situation.  This syllabus, along with your welcome information, has made it clear that this is a condensed class and the expectation that you will find time to complete the work in the scheduled class dates has been set and should be met.

E. Students With Disabilities: While this is normally not an issue with on-line courses, students with documented disabilities who may need accommodations, who have any emergency medical information the instructor should know of, or who need special arrangements, should contact the instructor as early as possible, no later than the first week of the term.
