Course Materials- Haruko Taya Cook, Japan at War ; Theodore DeBary, Sources of Japanese Tradition, Volume II (older 1950s or 1960s edition), Helen Hopper, Kato Shidzue ; and James McClain , Japan : A Modern History are required texts. They are available for purchase at the campus bookstore. Additional readings that are available online may be assigned.

Exams & Quizzes – All exams and quizzes must be taken as scheduled. Make ups will be allowed only in cases of extreme circumstances with appropriate documentation.

Paper – A five to seven-page paper is due on Aug 5. The paper must include a clear thesis, a logical argument, and well chosen supporting evidence. The paper should be typed, double-spaced, and include footnotes and bibliography formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style. The paper should be emailed to jsagers@linfield.edu as an MS Word or RTF attachment with your name as the file name.

Participation – To encourage student involvement in the course, approximately thirty percent of the final grade will depend upon contributions to small group and class online discussions.

Due Dates & Late Assignments – All assignments are due at 9:00 am McMinnville time on the date listed on the Course Schedule. Late work received within 12 hours of that time will be penalized five percent. Work received within one week of the due date will be penalized fifteen percent. No work will be accepted after one week of the due date.

Submission of Assigned Work- All work must be submitted to the specified location via Web CT unless otherwise specified by the instructor. Work that is not submitted according to instructions will not be accepted.

Criteria for Evaluation – All class work will be evaluated according to expressed interest in the topic, coherence of argument, organizational structure, presentation of evidence, and proper mechanics. Students new to writing history papers and exams should consult with the instructor.

Academic Honesty is crucial to the educational mission of the college. Academic dishonesty, as defined in the Linfield catalog, will be penalized with a failing grade on the offending assignment and will be referred to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action.

Disability Statement- Students with documented disabilities who may need accommodations, who have any emergency medical information the instructor should know of, or who need special arrangements in the event of evacuation, should make an appointment with the instructor as early as possible, no later than the first week of the term.
