Course Policies

Course Materials- The following books are required texts for the course and are available for purchase in the campus bookstore: Bruce Cumings, Korea's Place in the Sun, Patricia Ebrey, Chinese Civilization: A Sourcebook, Helen Hopper, Kato Shidzue, Rhoads Murphey, East Asia: A New History and Truong Nhu Tang, A Viet Cong Memoir. Additional reading from online sources may be assigned.

 

Exams & Quizzes – All exams and quizzes must be taken as scheduled. Make ups will be allowed only in cases of extreme circumstances with appropriate documentation.

 

Paper – A five to seven-page paper is due on May 12. The paper must include a clear thesis, a logical argument, and well chosen supporting evidence. The paper should be typed, double-spaced, and include footnotes and bibliography formatted according to the any recognized bibliographic style. A one-page outline of your argument is due April 21.

 

Participation – To encourage student involvement in class discussions, approximately twenty percent of the final grade will depend upon participation. Student participation will be evaluated on the basis of contribution to class discussions, presentations, short assignments, and general level of preparation.

 

Due Dates & Late Assignments – All assignments are due at noon, McMinnville time on the date listed on the Course Schedule. Late work received within 12 hours of that time will be penalized five percent. Work received within one week of the due date will be penalized fifteen percent. No work will be accepted after one week of the due date.

 

Submission of Assigned Work- All work must be submitted to the specified location via Web CT unless otherwise specified by the instructor. Work that is not submitted according to instructions will not be accepted.

 

Criteria for Evaluation – All class work will be evaluated according to expressed interest in the topic, coherence of argument, organizational structure, presentation of evidence, and proper mechanics. Students new to writing history papers and exams should consult with the instructor.

 

Academic Honesty is crucial to the educational mission of the college. Academic dishonesty, as defined in the Linfield Catalog , will be penalized with a failing grade on the offending assignment and will be referred to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action.

 

Disability Statement- Students with documented disabilities who may need accommodations, who have
any emergency medical information the instructor should know of, or who need special arrangements in the event of evacuation, should make an appointment with the instructor as early as possible, no later than the first week of the term.

100 points - Participation in discussion forum and short assignments

50 points - 2 x 25 pt quizzes

50 points - Paper proposal

50 points- Essay exam

100 points - Paper

150 points- Final exam
