You should consider taking a course in statistics if your research area is in Sociology and especially if you are planning to attend graduate school. Talk to your advisor about taking Linfield’s MATH 140 Introduction to Statistics.

Transfer Credit

Linfield will grant transfer credit toward the Social & Behavioral Sciences major for courses in anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology and sociology from other accredited institutions. In certain cases, you may be asked to supply a course description or syllabus.

Research Project

It is crucial for the student who chooses this major to work closely with an advisor. You need to plan your program carefully in order to complete the research proposal and project in your senior year. You are expected to take the methods class in fall and complete the project in the spring. Currently, students majoring in Social & Behavioral Sciences may plan a research project in Sociology, Anthropology, or History. Your advisor will have the information you need to prepare for the project. The following courses comprise the research methods and project sequences:

HIST 285 Methods of Historical Research 5 cr &
HIST 490 Research Project 5 cr
SOAN 308 Social Research Methods 3 cr &
SOAN 490 Research Project 4 cr

Students should plan to complete 4-5 upper division Linfield courses in Sociology/Anthropology, Psychology, or History prior to the research methods course.
