McMinnville, Ore – Sept 30, 2013 – Linfield College announces that registration is open for a free workshop on February 22, 2014 about successfully winning scholarships for college. The workshop, called Path to Scholarships, is open to Linfield Adult Degree Program (ADP) applicants, students and their family members. The workshop provides a significant return for a small investment in time: last year, online degree program students who attended Linfield’s workshop earned an average of $3,000 in scholarships. This year, all ADP students attending the workshop will be eligible to win a special Linfield College $500 scholarship that will be awarded at the event.
The workshop teaches prospective and current college students techniques to successfully apply for scholarships. Gerardo Ochoa, Linfield’s Associate Director of Financial Aid, Portland campus, will be leading the four-hour session. Linfield College is dedicated to providing scholarships for online degrees. It has held Path to Scholarships workshops since 2011, and the workshop has greatly benefitted Linfield’s student body. ADP students have praised Mr. Ochoa’s “honest and constructive comments,” and Linfield nursing student Janasa Herndon says, “I won over eight scholarships after taking this class, some of which I didn’t think I would ever win!”
Since the cost of tuition is often an important concern for older learners considering enrolling in an adult college degree program, scholarships are a particularly attractive source of funding. Scholarships are more similar to gifts than loans: unlike funding from loans, funding from scholarships is not expected to be repaid.
ADP applicants, students, and family members who attend the workshop will gain practical tools that set them up for success as they apply for scholarships. First, attendees will build a strong foundation for the scholarship application process by gaining organizational tools like checklists and planning forms. In addition, students will learn effective research techniques for locating local, regional, national, corporate, nonprofit, and employer-supported scholarships. Most importantly, they will learn how to frame a story about themselves that will inspire grantors to invest in their futures. On the logistical side, students will gain tips on securing quality recommendation letters and staying on top of deadlines. Finally, students will leave with their own rough drafts of a winning scholarship essay, and complimentary copies of College Edition Path to Scholarships: Career, College, and Scholarship Planning Portfolio. As Erika Williams, online accounting degree winner of the ADP Alumni Scholarship Fund says, “It is never too late to pursue an education.” By attending the Path to Scholarships workshops, adult learners empower themselves to better afford their education.
Students can attend the Path to Scholarships workshop online or in person. The workshop will be presented in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday February 22, from 8:30am to 12:30pm Pacific Time. Distance learners can attend the live session online and interact with Mr. Ochoa through the virtual classroom. Advanced registration, by February 18, is required. Current Linfield ADP students can register online with their student ID. New applicants can register with a registration form.
