Letter to All DCE Graduates

TO: Candidates for Graduation
FROM: John Gallagher
RE: Baccalaureate and Commencement

Commencement day is rapidly approaching, and we look forward to the celebration. Below you will find information to help you plan for this important event. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call the Division of Continuing Education office at 800-452-4176 or 503-883-2447.

Graduates are allowed 4 tickets for guests. These tickets are only necessary if weather forces the ceremony indoors. We encourage you to plan on good weather and invite as many friends and family as you would like. (In the event of inclement weather, commencement would be moved into the Ted Wilson Gymnasium. Only those people with tickets will be admitted.  Tickets are distributed to seniors prior to commencement.  Information will be posted on 503-883-CATS  by 7 a.m. on the day of commencement.)

A professional photographer will take a picture of each graduate as you receive your diploma. You will be contacted by the photographer and given the opportunity to purchase photos.

Caps and Gowns:

Caps and gowns are worn at both Baccalaureate and Commencement. Contact the Linfield College Bookstore to order caps, gowns and announcements (503-883-2240).

Academic Honors:

Latin honors designations are awarded to those baccalaureate degree candidates who have earned a minimum of 54 Linfield credits in courses with differentiated grades (A-F). The GPA calculation is based on all Linfield credit, including Linfield study abroad, and utilizes the Linfield repeat policy. The award levels are as follows:

Suma cum laude: 3.900 - 4.000
Magna cum laude: 3.800 - 3.899
Cum laude: 3.650 - 3.799

Academic Clearance:

It is your responsibility to make sure that (1) there are no missing grades or incomplete grades on your transcript and that (2) we have received official transcripts of all work completed at other institutions. Students who have not completed all coursework by the end of the semester will receive a blank diploma at Commencement.

Petition to Participate:

If you will not have all degree requirements completed by Commencement day, please fill out the Petition to Participate as soon as possible.

Clearing of Accounts:

Make sure that your student account with the College is paid in full or that you have made satisfactory arrangements with the Accounting Office prior to the end of the semester. Students with uncleared accounts will not be able to receive a diploma or transcript.

Exit Interviews:

The Financial Aid Office will send exit interview packets to your home address. You do not need to come to campus for this purpose.

On behalf of the entire staff of the Division of Continuing Education, I would like to offer congratulations on the completion of your Linfield degree. It represents an enormous amount of time and effort, often at the expense of other obligations. Best wishes for success in the future.

Congratulations to all Candidates for Graduation!
