Earlier this year, we conducted a survey of alumni who graduated from the Adult Degree Program (ADP) in the past five years, to find out what their employment experience has been since completing their degrees.We also checked on the retention and graduation rates for Adult Degree Program students. The results are in, and we’re pleased to report that Linfield ADP students demonstrate high graduation and employment rates.
We looked at our retention rates because they are a predictor of graduation. The first year when an adult student returns to college is a crucial time for meeting key academic milestones that provide students with momentum toward degree completion. We examined retention rates of our students in the 2011-2012 academic year that completed the orientation in their degree program (the Entry Colloquium or the online RN to BSN Orientation). A striking 85% enrolled again at Linfield for the following year. This impressive figure is another key indicator that shows the Adult Degree Program students are demonstrating success in all of our accredited online bachelor’s degree programs.
To discover the graduation rates, we examined the data on students who started at Linfield in the ADP as transfer students (with any number of credits) and finished their degrees in the same academic year of 2011-2012. More than half (54%) graduated in 2 calendar years or fewer, and a whopping 72% graduated in 3 calendar years or fewer.
Taking another approach, we examined the graduation rates of ADP students who enrolled in the orientation class in their field of study during the same year.
Graduation rates — of students who enrolled in the Entry Colloquium or NURS 309 in:
- 2006-07, 60% graduated within 4 years; 67% within 6 years
- 2007-08, 65% graduated within 4 years;
- 2008-09, 61% graduated within 4 years.
Considering that the vast majority of the Adult Degree Program students are attending college at a distance, part time, while working fulltime and managing family responsibilities along with classes, Linfield’s ADP graduation rates are remarkable.
This blog post coincides with the end of a semester when many Adult Degree Program students are graduating. Some of our new graduates are starting new jobs, thanks to their recently acquired knowledge and achieving their bachelor’s degree. We received this note from James Miller, who is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in accounting:
“I just want to let you know that I was recently hired as a staff accountant at a local firm here in my home town of Walla Walla, WA. This would not have been remotely possible without this program that I will finish up in December!”
Congratulations to all of the Linfield College graduates who have achieved your degrees through the online Adult Degree Program! You make us proud!
