How often will I need to use a computer?

To be a successful online student you will need daily access to a computer.

Do I have a Mac (Macintosh computer) or a PC?

Macs (also called Apple) are computers and laptops that run on the OS operating system. They are only manufactured by Apple Inc..

PCs are computers and laptops that run on the Windows operating system. They are manufactured by many companies including Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba ....

How do I find information about my computer (model, operating system, amount of RAM...)?

In order to get support for technical problems you will need to know things about your computer.

On the outside of your desktop computer (or near the keyboard on your laptop): You will find a logo of the manufacturer and sometimes the model name/number.

On the back of your desktop computer (or bottom of your laptop): You will find the serial number tag that also contains the make and model.

With your computer on you can find system information including the model, operating system, the amount of RAM

  • On a Mac computer or laptop click the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and select About this Computer.
  • On a PC computer or laptop locate the System Properties - This is done in different ways depending on what operating system you have.

How do I change settings on my computer?

You may need to be able to change such settings as how your mouse works or which speakers your computer will use.

On a Mac computer or laptop click the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and select System Preferences. Check out this guide to changing system preferences.

On a PC computer or laptop click on the start menu and select either Settings or Control panel.

Do I need to be able to troubleshoot problems with my computer?

To be a successful online student you need to be comfortable using and willing to explore your computer. Though you do not need to be a computer expert, you will be expected to download and install software, check settings, create and verify new online accounts, and find help to solve technical challenges.

How do I find out what software applications/programs are installed on your computer?

On a Mac computer or laptop click the Finder icon in your dock. On the menu at the top of the screen, click Go and select Applications. A window will open listing all of the applications on your computer.

On a PC computer or laptop click the Start button and select All Programs. A list will open of all the applications on your computer.

Do I need a Web Cam?

To be a successful online student you will need a web cam connected to a computer. Most laptops and computers now come with a web cam. If your computer does not have one you can purchase a web cam at many stores for under $30.00.

Do I need a Headset?

It is not necessary to get one immediately. Some classes will require you to use headphones. If needed a headset with a mic can be purchased at many stores for under $25.00
