Campus Safety Message
Linfield is currently reviewing and revising safety measures after two Linfield students were assaulted off-campus by non-students. These incidents are under investigation by the McMinnville Police Department with the full cooperation and support of Linfield College.
The safety and security of students, faculty and staff is our highest priority. We routinely review our safety procedures, train staff and send out alerts and general safety reminders to members of the Linfield community.
A number of things are under way to try to enhance the safety of the college community.
• College Public Safety has modified its patrol of Davis Street between Potter and the fieldhouse on weekends;
• The college is in communication with McMinnville Police, who will provide increased patrols, to the extent possible, during the upcoming weekend;
• The Associated Students of Linfield College (student government) is exploring a town hall meeting next week to discuss safety issues.
• College Public Safety is exploring ways to develop other types of patrol;
• The ASLC is in discussion with campus administrators an idea to develop an affordable taxi service that can serve as an option to walking back to campus from Third Street or other local areas;
• The college will ask the City of McMinnville to determine whether there is adequate lighting on Davis Street.
In addition, we are reminding all students, faculty and staff to report any suspicious activity to College Public Safety immediately. We also have reminded students to follow all safety guidelines when leaving campus:
• Walk together in groups;
• Use College Public Safety escorts when needed;
• Be aware of your surroundings at all times (don’t talk on the phone or send text messages);
• Report any behavior that appears suspicious;
• Never allow anyone access to residence halls, unless they have card access to the building.
Our open college campus is not immune to violence, although it is rare. Because we are a community of less than 2,000, we have a strong track record for watching out for each other and pay close attention to our friends and neighbors. Community members are encouraged to contact College Public Safety if they observe suspicious behavior.
