Homecoming celebration highlights October

The power of a small college was alive and well over the weekend, when hundreds of Wildcats gathered on campus for homecoming festivities. Amid a myriad of planned activities such as tours, classes, concerts, reunions, a sampling of Linfield’s Finest, barbecue and football game, classmates found time to sit back and catch up. See a photo slideshow of highlights from the weekend on the Linfield website.

CNN features Linfield interviews

CNN and Comcast Newsmakers are broadcasting interviews with President Thomas Hellie, pictured left, Coach Scott Brosius '88 and psychology Professor Jennifer Linder throughout October. The five-minute segments air on Portland’s Channel 45, at 54 minutes after the hour with the exception of primetime, from 8 to 10 p.m. You can also view the interviews on Comcast Cable.

McMinnville is hot spot for wine and food

A new exhibition by Linfield students and professors, “Bringing Vines to the Valley,” chronicles the early years of the Oregon wine industry with interviews, photos, videos and artifacts. Supported by Linfield’s new Center for the Northwest and funded by a grant from the Erath Family Foundation, the project is on display at the Jereld R. Nicholson Library. Read the News-Register story. Bon Appétit magazine named McMinnville one of “America’s Foodiest Towns,” showcasing the International Pinot Noir Celebration held each year on the picturesque Linfield campus.

Expand your network

Linfield alumni in the greater Portland area are invited to mix, mingle and network on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 5:30 p.m. at the upcoming Linfield Professionals Networking event, hosted by Peter Fisher ’96, left, of Human Investing in Lake Oswego. Don’t miss this great opportunity to promote yourself or your business and socialize with fellow Wildcats.

Uncommonly good books

Each year, Linfield’s entering freshmen read a book and spend the year discussing it. Students are currently discussing In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto by Michael Pollan. Looking ahead to next year, the common read committee is seeking your suggestions. Visit the Linfield College Facebook site to propose a book and tell us why you think it’s worth reading.

Expanding adult degree offerings

With demand for online education increasing, Linfield is answering the call. Linfield’s Adult Degree Program now offers five accredited online degrees and three accredited online certificate programs. The programs are designed for the growing number of students demanding flexibility to balance work, family and education. Read the Oregonian story.

Transforming lives

Latino enrollment among Linfield nursing students tripled between 2002 and 2009. Transforming Lives: Linfield College Nursing Workforce Diversity Project details Linfield’s success in diversifying the nursing student population to more closely reflect the richness of Oregon in the healthcare workforce. The initiatives will broaden to other under-represented groups under the leadership of new director of multicultural programs, Micheal Reyes Andrillon.

Tapping the Wildcat network

Linfield’s Director of Annual Giving is moving to Scotland! Help us identify the next fundraising professional who will fill this important role for the college. To learn more about the position, refer a friend or submit your application, visit the Linfield website. Help spread the word on your Facebook and LinkedIn pages.

A student job that really pays the bills

Justine Beaton ’13, pictured left and a pre-nursing major and residence hall advisor, likes to spend her free time asking people for money. She’s a two-year veteran of the Linfield phonathon program, and top phonathon performer for 2009-10, raising more than $13,000 by herself. And she loves the job.

Heard on Campus

"As a senior, Linfield has been the best experience of my life. It is a fabulous school where people actually know you and they care about who you are as a person not just a check."

– Kate Kilborn '11, online response to Linfield's inclusion in "Seven Colleges Worth Their Tuition" in The Huffington Post.
