Boots on the ground: Studying war in Vietnam
During January Term, Patrick Cottrell, assistant professor of political science, led students on a journey to Vietnam. They interviewed military veterans before traveling to Vietnam, where they met a Vietnamese vet, joined a tour guide who fled with the boat people, and received briefings about the aftermath of the conflict from Vietnamese scholars and senior American officials. “When our vets fought, many were the same age as our students,” said Cottrell. Watch a video about the experience.

Belonging at home and abroad
Reshmi Dutt-Ballerstadt knows a thing or two about citizenship and belonging. An associate professor of English who hails from India, Dutt-Ballerstadt became a U.S. citizen six years ago. In December, Oregon Public Broadcasting’s David Miller interviewed her about her experience and her newly published book, The Postcolonial Citizen: The Intellectual Migrant.
