Alternative Spring Break
Trips in 2009
Portland Urban Homelessness Plunge (March 21-28, 2009): Spend the week in Portland as you learn first-hand about the urban homeless crisis, how service providers meet the population’s daily needs, and Multnomah County’s 10-year plan to end homelessness. Proposed service projects include volunteering with Sisters of the Road and other Portland non-profit organizations. Live simply in community during the week as you share in group meals and daily reflections.
Rebuild St. Bernard Parish, LA (March 21-29, 2009): Immerse yourself in the unique culture of Louisiana as you volunteer with The St. Bernard Project. This nonprofit, grassroots organization aims to remove barriers for families who wish to move back into their homes in St. Bernard Parish, an area devastated by the flooding of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Volunteers will work in teams on rebuilding projects while learning about the social and cultural context surrounding Hurricane Katrina. Live in community for the week in dorm-style housing at Camp Hope.
Habitat Global Village, Guatemala (March 19-29, 2009): Travel to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala where you will join Habitat for Humanity’s global fight to eliminate poverty housing. Volunteers will construct a decent and affordable home and learn about the living conditions of low-income Guatemalan families. Participants will be housed in simple hotel rooms. *Please note: This trip departs on Thursday prior to break.
