IDS 287: Career Exploration Internship
What is a Career Exploration Internship?
An internship provides the opportunity for students to receive
valuable insight into their chosen field by working part-time in
a business or organization. The intent of this program is to offer
students an opportunity to explore job possibilities, especially
freshman, sophomores and students in departments without internships.
Am I eligible?
Most likely you can take IDS 287 if your academic department doesn't
offer internships, if you are not yet eligible for your departments
internship, or if you want to supplement the departmental internship
requirements and opportunities. As long as you're in good academic
standing (2.5+ GPA), you're eligible.
Why should I apply?
There are many benefits to a career exploration internship, including
meeting important professional contacts, getting a change of pace
and equipping yourself for life after college. It also looks good
on your resume because it is real experience!
1. Visit your advisor or department chair to check requirements for department internships. If you are eligible, get an internship through your department. If not, move to step 2.
2. Visit the Office of Career Services (Walker 124), talk to Kristi Mackay, and confirm your eligibility.
3. Find an internship. You may find one on your own or use the internship resources in the Office of Career Services. Check out the internship database for positions available to Linfield students.
4. Set an appointment with Kristi Mackay to pick up paperwork.
5. Fill out the contract provided by Career Services and have your internship supervisor sign it.
6. After you are approved, register for IDS 287 - Career Exploration Internship. The amount of credit you recieve will be specified in your contract.
7. Begin your internship!
How much of my time is this going to take up?Besides the number of hours you work per week, you have to
- Meet with Kristi Mackay to learn specific requirements, which
may include:
- Read What Color Is You Parachute? by Richard Nelson Bolles, Ten Speed Press, Berkely, CA.
- Write a 2 - 3 page Reflection Paper (topic to be submitted for approval)
- Complete and submit a site and self evaluation.
- Confirm that an on-site evaluation from your supervisor is submitted to Linfield.
- Update your resume to include your internship.
- Present a 20 minute oral report on the internship to the IDS 287 class.
How many credits will I get?
Credit hours are determined by number of hours worked on-site.
They work out as follows.
| 99 total hours | = 2 Credit Hours |
| 154 total hours |
= 3 Credit Hours
|
| 209 total hours | = 4 Credit Hours* |
| 264 total hours | = 5 Credit Hours* |
* Additional requirements are necessary for 4 or 5 credit internships
Other things you should know...
You are responsible for identifying and applying for an internship yourself. Most internships will qualify as Career Exploration but all need to be approved.
Your internship contract must be received and apporoved before your Career Exploration Internship starts.
IDS 287 credits will not be issued without following the application process.
