Linfield Biology Major wins Fulbright

Julia Back, who received her BA in Biology last spring, has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for research in Australia for the next academic year. She will study and develop programs for the conservation of Australian Fur Seals, a species that is vulnerable to extinction, and is particularly threatened in southeast Australia by tourism. She will be working with Dr. John Arnould of Deakin University in Melbourne, who is well known for his research on marine birds and mammals.
Julia comes from Cascade Locks, Oregon. She grew up amid the natural beauty and cultural diversity of the Columbia River Gorge, and brought to Linfield a love of the outdoors and an interest in travel. Last year she spent the spring semester studying Biology and Spanish in South America. Her love for fur seals and a passion for their conservation came from working with them in the Galapagos Islands.
Julia is the 15th Linfield student since 1999 and the second Biology Major to receive a Fulbright Award.
About the Biology Department
The biology major's course of study begins with a year-long, team-taught course in the Principles of Biology, followed by a core of courses selected from three areas: Cell and Molecular Biology, Organismal Biology, and Population Biology. Depending upon the students’ interests, electives may be chosen from a variety of interesting courses. The major offers frequent opportunties to study abroad in such areas as Hawaii and Costa Rica.
Our location in the Willamette Valley is especially ideal for access to field study such as the South Slough Estuarine Sanctuary and the Hatfield Marine Science Center along the Oregon coast, the Hancock Field Station adjacent to the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, and the Malheur Field Station in Oregon's High Desert Country.
