My research lab studies the role of protein phosphorylation and other modifications in promoting cancer cell migration. Specifically, we are performing proteomic analyses of the pediatric bone cancer Ewing’s Sarcoma to determine the protein modifications involved in initiating and sustaining the metastatic phenotype. Coupled with this proteomic work, we also use live-time fluorescence microscopy to analyze the location of protein modifications during migration.
In addition to my laboratory research, I am interested in developing methods for improving biology and biochemistry education at the undergraduate level. Funded by an NSF-RCN award, I work with a multi-institutional group to improve introductory biology education. With national collaborators, I develop and implement POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) techniques in both biology and biochemistry. Finally, as a member of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Linfield program, I work to increase our students’ interdisciplinary skills.
