Our Facilities

Murdock Hall
The Biology Department is located in Murdock Hall. Murdock Hall was built in 1982 to provide classroom and laboratory space for the Departments of Biology and Chemistry. The solar atrium provides an environment to soak in the warmth of the sun or to watch the rain run down the windows. Murdock Hall includes large, comfortable labs, and many specialty areas including a walk-in environmental chamber, an isotope lab, an herbarium, a walk-in cold room and an animal room.
Excellent Scientific Instrumentation
The modern equipment in the departmental teaching and research labs includes a high quality compound microscope equipped with fluorescence, phase-contrast, and differential interference-contrast optics, and a high quality Zeiss dissecting microscope, both of which have photomicrography and video microscopy capabilities; a recently purchased liquid scintillation counter and a gamma spectrometer for radioisotopic studies and radio-immunoassays; high-speed centrifuges; a salt-water aquarium; a cell biology laboratory equipped with electronic cell counters, automated fraction collectors, blood-gas analyzers, an enzyme-immunoassay microplate reader, and a complete cell culture/tissue culture facility including a vertical laminar flow hood and CO2 incubator; a molecular biology laboratory equipped with DNA and protein electrophoresis equipment, power supplies, and a PCR machine; excellent computing facilities are also available in both Macintosh and PC platforms.
