Senate Minutes
March 8, 2010
- President of Senate Chris Norman called the Senate to order at 6:30 PM.
- Senators recited the Senate Creed.
- Senate Secretary Shelby Simmons took roll.
- Approval of the minutes from 3-1-10: approved as stands.
- Special Report
- Senate Proclamation: Justine Beaton informed Senate about the diploma proclamation written by Beaton and Norman. Leah Sedy asked what the “yes and no” means. Norman says it is if they believe proclamation or not. Septembre Russell asked why it is important to get the diploma when they graduate. Dylan Barthlomew said it is more of a psychological feeling and it would be nice to get. Beaton said it is tradition to get the diploma when they graduate and would be nice to take photos with diploma. Fergueson said 6 out of 9 of the schools get the diploma during graduation.

- i. Republicans Club: last week it was brought up that the club was disbanding. Ashlee Carter said the old president passed it along to the new leadership, and the old senator thought there was a new senator attending. Will wait until they finish the paper work for switching the leadership.

- Club de-charter: two clubs are no longer being clubs. The Oven, a newspaper and magazine club, decided they are no longer functioning, and Model UN because the club is struggling to get leadership.
- New Club charter: MEChA: Movimiento Esrudiantil Chicano de Aztlan—Patti Vazquez explained MEChA started in the 1960s of equal rights for students. Now it is about promoting higher education for Latinos and other minorities. There is a lot of community service, cultural awareness, and leadership. It would benefit Linfield for more diverse culture. Barry Tucker and Sonya Ticas are the advisors; Ticas was involved with MEChA in college. Jones went over the club charter process for becoming a provisional charter, then at the end of 6 weeks to become a permanent club.

- i. Nora Burnfield said there should be a community board for the McMinnville community to post events. Wesley Allegre said there is no net around the softball field, and the softball team actually tries to hit the cars. Gabe Stallings asked if there is a plan for another Astroturf field, stating his club is not allow to practice on the grass because they tear it up. Emily Jenkins said they wish to have better toilet paper put in. Sarah Wilder said the women’s bathroom in Murdock rarely has soap.
- Committee Reports
- Finance: Bryan said last week a Senate discretionary form was discussed and will be made and put upstairs, but currently still working on the details
- Standing Rules/Bylaws: Beaton met with executive committee about the structure of Senate.
- Campus Improvement: Reid had no report.
- Elections: Keliinoi asked about the last issue of the Linfield Review and the problems. Said he is disappointed with the lack of campaigning from the candidates. Debate is tonight, it is mandatory, and there is a drop box to submit questions. He suggested while getting people to sign the proclamation remind them to vote. His committee will meet to discuss what went well and what can be improved from this election. Cabinet applications are due on Friday and remember to meet with the cabinet members.
- Club Charter: Bond had no report.
- Community Action: Cruz met with Bill Masulo to do prizes for throwing pennies to support different organizations.
- Good News: Hatley/Jenkins said the Wildcat of the Week is Phi. The good news committee will try to improve more campus involvement. Told to go to the sports games and a fan could win a prize.
- Administrative Reports
- President: Carter said online voting starts at 10 am and can learn more about the candidates from the link. Need senators to sit at Dillin to help remind people about the election. Reid asked about the write-in candidate. It is clearly stated that you have to write in the candidate name. Fergueson said in Spring of ’07 was the last write-in and explained how it is posted with the Survey Monkey, this is as close to get without putting the name on the ballot. There is an official bylaw spelling out the guidelines for the candidates. T-shirts are here and need to be checked off the list. Senators need to wear them tomorrow. Tonight’s debate will be more debate style letting candidates actually debate each other. Faculty meeting today, the Dean said there are 3 new professors: new business chair, psych, and French education professors. President Hellie said the Northup renovation is about half way to where it needs to be and explained the trustee pledges. Brand meeting with the campus will be coming up. A lot of donations were made. Homer Williams donated 3 million; ¾ goes to science scholarships and ¼ goes to the library. Class could begin about wine.
- VP of Business and Finance: McIsaac went over the budget sheet. If anyone is interested in the Business & Finance position come talk with McIsaac. Glen Ford is coming next Monday to senate and anyone is welcome.
- VP of Programming: Peavey went over the What’s Happening sheet. Leah Sedy took a personal privilege. Peavey also talked about the club opportunities for Wildstock.
- Club Director: Jones said gave money for the Cesar Chavez day and Ski/Snowboard trip, along with the LAB stage for Wildstock. Club re-charters last 4 years and are currently in the process.
- Student Center Director: Lieb reminded people to come talk to cabinet members about the positions out there.
- Sports Director: Loepp said there are applications to be soccer official and rosters. Basketball is still going and soccer is starts after Spring Break.
- Publicity Director: Westhusing had no report.
- Director of College Activities: Fergueson went over events going on this week. Dean Hansen wanted to correct the review, saying it is the faculty discussion not the Dean deciding on diplomas. Karen Cole asked if students could come to faculty meetings. Fergueson said he wasn’t sure if it was a closed meeting. Often are only small changes made. Carol McColley is giving a lecture on Wednesday at 7:30. Two senior recitals this weekend. Comedian is now at 10 because of the recital. E-vote at 10 am will be sent to anyone that is eligible to vote. There are 1535 people that are going to be sent out, but let constituents know students will not get the email if they opted out of Survey Monkey. Must have 6 credits or more to vote. RA selection going on, so Fergueson will be in and out this week. USA Today will have a “don’t forget to vote today” sticker. It has been proofed so students will easily vote. Once voted the link will no longer work. McIsaac won a PR of over a minute and provisional qualified for nationals. Only Fergueson knows the password to the surveymonkey.
- Vice President: Norman said if there are confusions for the proclamation, come talk to him. Committee chairs are meeting this week.
- Secretary: Simmons played getting to know your senators with Justine Beaton.
