Patty (Smalley) and Jack Collins, both '66

Collins

March 4, 1964, a Wednesday evening, following the Delta Psi Delta meeting was the evening we were pinned.  It began in the Fall of 1962 though when my best friend, Audrey Fong, encouraged me to ask Jack Collins to a function.  After working up my courage to invite him, he told me someone else had asked and he was going with another.  It wasn’t until after we had a speech class together with Bruce Huffman  following the Christmas break in January, 1964, that he finally got around to asking me out!  By March he’d asked me to wear his pin and there was a serenade outside Potter Hall where I spent much of my time since I lived in town with my grandmother.  Then….he drove to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in July and we didn’t see one another until I flew back in January of 1965 for a visit.  Many letters and phone calls later..he returned to Oregon in January, 1966, and proposed. We were married in May of 1966 in Pittsburgh.  (I’ve often told him that wasn’t far enough to get away!)  After living in Pennsylvania for four years we returned to the West Coast and Seattle and continued the friendship we’d had with Audrey until her death in 2011.  We have wonderful memories of out Linfield friends and experiences.  It’s interesting to note that our daughter, Rachel, continued the tradition by attending Linfield, graduating in 1997 and marrying Mike Chapman, class of 1999 (another Delta).
