Alumni Profile: Nicholas Weiland '09

Program Specialist/Project Coordinator
United States Institute of Peace

Major: Philosophy

What are you doing now?
I work as a Program Specialist at the US Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington DC. USIP works to prevent and resolve armed conflict around the world by engaging directly in conflict zones and by providing analysis, education, and resources to those working for peace. I work for the Advising Support Program which trains US advisors from various government agencies in skills like negotiation, conflict analysis, and communication before they deploy abroad.

Tell us about yourself.
After graduating from Linfield College I explored my interest in international relations by teaching English in China for a year. In 2012 moved out to Washington DC with my wife to attended American University's School of International Service. I graduated with my Masters in US Foreign Policy two years later and have been working at USIP ever since. In my free time I pursue my love for the outdoors by running, hiking, camping, and exploring the DC area.

How did Linfield help prepare you for your career?
I consider my time at Linfield College to be a critical step in my personal and professional development. The relationships I built with other students have continued long after graduation while the passion and intellectual curiosity inspired by my studies in Philosophy and Political Science provided the foundation to pursue a career in international relations.
