June 2016 E-Cat

Welcome new alumni – Class of 2016 graduates

Some took selfies, others waved to the crowd, one even did pushups – but all of the Linfield College graduates smiled as they walked across the stage to receive their diploma. Some 639 graduates earned degrees during commencement exercises Sunday, May 29. Michael Lindblad '94, the 2015 Oregon Teacher of the Year, delivered the commencement address to the Linfield Class of 2016. Golden Grads, individuals who graduated from Linfield 50 or more years ago, also marched in the commencement ceremony. Baccalaureate included a presentation by Margaret Marcuson, an ordained American Baptist minister, followed by Grad Finale, during which graduating seniors and their families were honored with toasts. Watch a video of commencement highlights and view photos from the weekend.

Faculty recognized for teaching, research

Three Linfield College faculty members were honored recently for their contributions inside and outside the classroom. Recipients include Jeremy Weisz, associate professor of biology, The Samuel Graf Faculty Achievement Award; Scott Smith, professor of history, The Edith Green Distinguished Professor Award; and Ty Marshall, professor of theatre arts, The Olds and Hellie Creative Achievement Award. Read along with students

Looking for a summer read? This year's Common Read selection is Dave Eggers' novel The Circle. The book complements the theme of this year's Program for the Liberal Arts and Civic Engagement "The Digital Self." As you're reading, consider these questions about your own experiences as a "digital self" in today's technology-saturated world. The goals of the Common Read program are to promote academic discourse and critical thinking, to create a sense of community among incoming students, and to integrate an academic and social experience into the Campus community.

Award-winning alumni and friends

Each year during Homecoming, Linfield recognizes outstanding alumni who have made positive contributions in their fields and who have impacted the college and others through their service. This year the college will recognize Floyd McKay '57 as Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, Kerry Nordstrom '10 as Outstanding Young Alumna and Pete Dengenis '64 as the Alumni Service Award recipient. The college also gives the Charles and Cherie Walker Award to non-alumni who have impacted the college through service. This year the Walker Award will be presented to David and Jeanne Beck. Read more about these award recipients and celebrate their talents at Linfield's Finest on Friday, Sept. 30, during Homecoming.

Expanding the Linfield network west

If you live or work in Beaverton, Hillsboro or Vancouver, the next Linfield Professionals Network event is for you. Join fellow alumni at fUSe Studios PDX in Beaverton on Wednesday, July 13, at 5:30 p.m. This networking opportunity is hosted by Lisa Marie (Baumann) Hunt '02 of Events by Lisa Marie. Alumni of all professions and industries are welcome to attend. Learn more or register online.

Summer days at Linfield

Linfield is quieter as summer begins, but many students remain on campus working side by side with professors on research projects, gaining invaluable experience in their areas of study. In a matter of weeks, many incoming freshmen will arrive early to participate in iFOCUS, an innovative week-long science program, as Carmen Hoffbeck '19 did last year. Gifts to Linfield help make these kinds of opportunities possible and have a long-lasting impact on students. Support Linfield students today!

Paws and putts

Let's hope those putts, chips and drives at the Wildcat Open are as successful as Linfield's 19 athletic programs. This year's tournament returns to The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha on Friday, Aug. 5. Not one, but two championship courses will be available; which means as many as 288 Wildcats will have an opportunity to tee it up for Linfield College. Register now or learn more.
