Step 4 - Sketch out your plan for Fall 2009 classes

When reviewing the Fall 2009 Class Offerings and developing your first semester course schedule, here are some suggestions for courses to include and things to consider:

Colloquium (IDST 007)

A reservation has already been made for your Colloquium section and you cannot change Colloquium sections. This course will appear on your schedule when you log into WebAdvisor and view your Fall Semester course schedule.

An Inquiry Seminar (INQS 125)

All first-year students must complete an Inquiry seminar in the fall or spring semester of their first year. Review the INQS course descriptions and reserve space in one that interests you. If one of these courses does not work with your schedule, plan to enroll in one in Spring semester.

1-2 courses in areas of interest

Refer to the the Advising Information by Area of Interest  and the Area of Interest Grid to select 1-2 of the suggested courses for your first semester at Linfield. If you are undecided, consider taking a course in a completely new area or one that is a prerequisite for potential majors.

1-2 courses that satisfy Linfield Curriculum (LC) requirements

These courses may also be in your potential areas of interest. Review the Linfield Curriculum requirements and plan to enroll in 1-2 courses that interest you and satisfy these requirements.

A language course

Consider selecting a language course if you are planning to major or minor in a language, pursue a B.A. degree, study abroad, or are interested in different languages. Refer to the Placement and Proficiency Information if you plan to continue study of a language you have studied in high school.

A math course

If you have not yet fulfilled Math Proficiency with your SAT/ACT Math score and/or you would like to continue your study of Math, selecting a math course in your first semester is a good choice. Review the Mathematics Placement/Advising Worksheet to select an appropriate college-level math course.

Electives

Over one third of the credits you will complete at Linfield will be elective credits - meaning that they do not fulfill major, minor, or Linfield Curriculum requirements. These are classes that help you to discover new academic interests and pursue areas of inquiry. These classes may also include paracurricular courses (identified as an activity course numbered below 100). If you are an intercollegiate fall athlete, you may be required to enroll in an activity course in your sport. Check with your coach.

Other requirements

If your admission included provisions, refer to your letter of admission for specific requirements. You may, for example, be pre-enrolled in IDST 010 (Learning Skills) or restricted to reserving no more than 14 credits for your first semester. If you have a learning disability and/or would like to request accommodations, please contact the Office of Learning Support Services (or at 503-883-2562).

Utilize planning resources

  • Make a list of classes that interest you and create several alternative schedules on the blank Sample Schedule Worksheet.  Some classes may be closed when you are making course reservations.

Be prepared with alternative schedules

Continue to Step 5 to Evaluate your proposed Fall semester schedule
